A FUNDRAISING day will be held at the Salisbury Guildhall on May 17 to raise money for Dara - the world's only hairy-nosed otter in captivity.

The breed is rare and was thought to be extinct in 1998. Dara was caught by fur traders, but was rescued.

He now lives happily in Phnom Tamau Zoo in Cambodia, but needs a proper pen to live in, which will cost approximately £2,500 to build.

Carol Bennetto is one of the founders of Furgetmenot, a group set up to help Dara and other otters in danger.

Members are raising the money so the current situation can be improved and a pen can be built.

The event at the Guildhall is to start off the fundraising. There will be stalls, crafts and activities for all the family.

Children can also take part in a colouring competition. To pick up an entry form, visit the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) in Salisbury, colour in Dara then return it to the centre. It will be judged on the day with prizes to be won.

There are also three competitions for children from seven to 16 running over the half term break, from 24 May 24 to June 7. Entry forms can also be picked up from the TIC.
