Chippenham Town chairman Derek Hooper has resigned after just four months, the Gazette understands.

The club has yet to officially confirm his resignation but the Gazette understands he officially stood down two weeks ago, telling the club's board that he wanted to quit to look after his wife, who is ill.

Hooper, 60, only took over in December when Sandie Webb stood down.

The club will now run without a chairman until a new candidate comes forward. Sandie Webb has take charge of commercial activities.

Hooper, who owns Carpet Barn in Chippenham, had hoped to attract new investment to the club but failed to bring directors. He also appealed to more fans to come to games after the club's average gate dropped below 500.

The club has an ongoing debt of around £15,000.
