THE new floor at Fordingbridge Town Hall performed well under the click of heels as couples waltzed, jived, foxtrotted and cha cha'd as the town hall played host to the first tea dance since around 1940 on Thursday.

The Fordingbridge and district group of Save The Children Fund put on the tea dance and managed to put smiles on faces while raising £70 for the charity.

Yvonne Fox from the group said the event had been a great success: "It was terrific and the atmosphere was great.

"Jackie Taplin who provided the music free of charge, showed the dancers some new line dances and sequence dances as well as the ordinary quickstep, foxtrot, jive and cha cha, so we did the whole syllabus!"

She added: "We were trying to do something different to raise money for Save the Children. A lot of people help us with fetes and fairs.

"The town hall floor has been done and it's so good and everything is so nice there."

Town Hall Clerk Helen Tague commented: "Following the town council having the floor sanded and lacquered they thought it might be suitable for dancing and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves."
