Chance for gardeners to show their stuff

WHETHER you are a patio pruner, are crazy for chrysanthemums or simply love your lawn, you could be sowing your own seeds of success this year.

The annual South Wiltshire Summer Gardens Competition will be held in late June and early July and organisers Salisbury District Council are hoping for plenty of entries from local garden enthusiasts, up until the deadline of 13 June.

Entrants are in with a chance to win cash prizes of up to £250 and various trophies.

You can enter any of the following categories:

  • Best front garden (all ages)
  • Best front garden (senior citizens)
  • Best back garden (all ages
  • Best back garden (senior citizens)
  • Best container display
  • Special gardens (for individuals with learning difficulties and caring establishments)
  • Best Bed and Breakfast
  • Best pub or restaurant
  • Best hotel
  • Best set of Photographs

Salisbury District Council's Parks Manager, Reg Williams, said: "This competition rewards local people for their passion for gardening and commitment to ensuring south Wiltshire remains a beautiful district to live in and visit."

The overall winner, excluding commercial categories and photographs, will receive the Wilton House Cup and £250 in cash or vouchers. First, second and third places will be awarded with certificates in all categories and the winner of each category will be presented with a trophy to keep for a year.

Leaflets are available from all Council Offices and Tourist Information Centres within the district and entries should be submitted by 13 June. Alternatively, you can submit your entry details over the phone on 01722 434634.

Judging will take place between the 20 June 20 and July 4 and winners will be notified several weeks before the award ceremony, which will take place at the Guildhall on September 17.
