More than 150 drivers in Swindon and Wiltshire have now been shopped to a driving website that displays their number plates.

BetterDrivingPlease.com was set up so anyone can report bad driving they see on local roads.

More than 13,000 reports have been made since the site was set up in 2006. Reporters note the number plate of the offending vehicle, what they did and where.

Reports from around this area include Swindon:100, Wootton Bassett: 30, Salisbury: 32, Winchester: 7.

Founder Andrew McGavin believes the county's roads are getting more and more dangerous. He said: "Despite recent laws banning the use of handheld mobile phones at the wheel, and corporate manslaughter laws forcing companies to put in place better driving policies, our roads are more dangerous than ever.

"It's now the norm to see dangerous driving on every journey you make. The message isn't getting through to drivers and the police aren't catching enough people.

That's what makes a database like this necessary."

The full number plates and details of these incidents are available on BetterDrivingPlease.com.

Andrew added: "The more reports there are on the site, the more powerful a weapon it becomes against the small minority of stupid drivers who make it dangerous for the rest of us on the roads".

A motoring form of vigilantes?
If a person has a concern about someone's driving, they should surely report it to the Police otherwise people will start making allegations on this web-site which could be totally unfounded. Similar to rape allegations?
What a dodgy road this country is following if this web-site is allowed.
Could you sue the web-site owner for its content if you ask him to prove it?
What a can of worms it opens, even if it seems a laudable idea, in the first instance.

The Nanny State is quite nanny enough on its own without encouraging it. Point taken about false acusations, Andrew, though I hardly think the ensuing comment about rape accusations is much help. Many rapes go unreported because of that sort of comment!!

Despite the nanny state's condemnation of motorists, far more seriously, it let's murderers, rapists and child molesters back on the streets.

I'm sorry PS, but false rape allegations lead to a fair number of suicides among young men, even when a person is found innocent.
You may not think the comment helped, but ANY matter when false allegations are made is a serious matter and for those that dont get reported is another matter.
I dont know why you have gone on about the nanny state as even the next Conservative Govt will NOT reverse it, but bring in their own nanny laws as they think they know best.
Maybe this web-site will be closed down?
We all see people driving badly at times (even the best driver makes the odd mistake!), but since when can an individual become judge AND jury on motoring issues?

Who is this chap who feels it is necessary to take this upon himself? Has he never exceeded a speed limit, inadvertantly crossed a double white line, or shot through traffic lights on amber when he was in a hurry?

People like him make me sick, do gooders, holier-than-thou types who seem to believe they are somewhat better than the rest of us.

The UK already has the safest roads in Europe thanks to stringent driving tests and a generally good standard of drivers. Do we really need his "rat someone up" attitude when the Police are here to enforce road safety and driving standards?

I hope someone sees him and reports even the mildest transgression - maybe seeing HIS licence plate number on line wll make him change his tune.....

Just had a quick look at this website. Can you believe there seems to be one person (named hamster) who has posted 1200 reports since he/she joined in Jan08 ! Probably more like them, but I only looked for 2 mins. Looks like he spends his time up & down motorways reporting dozens a day for things like "fails to move back into an empty inside lane" Fair comment, but at the rate he/she post them, it sounds he/she can't be concentrating on his/her OWN driving !
Just hope he/she is not typing in number plates on a lap top at the same time !
