SUPERMARKET chain ASDA has lost its latest bid to build a £25m store in Langley Park, Chippenham.

The proposals had caused uproar among people living in the area who were opposed to the plans from the start.

North Wiltshire District Council refused to support the plans, which led to an appeal by ASDA.

Following the appeal hearing, planning inspector Geoff Salter said he had reached a decision based on a number of points, including the adverse affect the store would have on Chippenham town centre shopping and the size of the proposed 52,000sqft development.

It is now thought the ASDA chain might make a play for the Bridge Centre site.

Everyone is saying that Chippenham does not need another Supermarket but I am sure that it was stated earlier on in the year that Waitrose might be moving into Chippenham. It will be interesting to see what happens there !!! Maybe they only want supermakets in Chippenham now for the more UPPER CLASS FOLKS . I agree if Chippenahm are to POSH to have an ASDA then yes bring it Corsham and we will welcome it with open arms.

I would just like to point out that it has nothing to do with class but to do with the amount of people living in Chippenham against the supermarkets that we have. Since moving here Katherine Park in Corsham and Great Mead Chippenham has been developed with hundreds more housing, but where are all these people supposed to shop? I use both Morrisons and Sainsburys and sometimes you are fighting for a space and cars are illegally parked. I would welcome both Asda and a Waitrose.

I agree with MiniMum. There are not enough supermarkets to deal with the amount of residents in Chippenham.

Sainsburys and Morrisons carparks are almost full every single day of the week.

Christmas shopping is a nightmare. A lot of shoppers park outside the bays (because they can't find a space). So these morons add to the parking problem!

Yes, this reader would indeed want another Chippenham supermarket.
