THE relaunch of Bowerhill Youth Club was marred by heartless vandals who attacked the pavilion where the club is based.
The club shut for five months after asbestos was found in the roof, reopening on Wednesday. However the Sunday before, yobs broke into the pavilion on Bowerhill Sports Field and attacked an area at the far end used by local football teams and sports clubs.
Organiser Janet Jory said: "The opening of the club went really well, the young people were glad to be back. "They just want somewhere to meet and chat and now they have that again.
"They played a bit of piano and a bit of basketball. "However, what happened at the other end of the building is horrific.
"They broke in through a door by kicking it in and then snapped our pool cues and broke the cricket bats that we had been storing in that end of the pavilion.
"They threw white paint everywhere and damaged sports equipment belonging to local teams as well as breaking two internal doors down and windows."
Mrs Jory said the youth club would have to fork out £150 to replace damaged equipment but she said the situation was worse for local football teams.
"They wont be able to use it at all," she said.
"I spent the whole day with the police on Monday and they took away shoe imprints, cigarette butts and lots of evidence.
"The vandals also tried to set fire to the building as we could see that some of the posters on the walls had been set alight."
