A Wiltshire local is hoping to bring a town centre unit “back to life” after opening a new barbershop.

Damien Plunkett opened the doors of The Fine Barber Co, on Sidmouth Street in Devizes, on March 22 after closing his Melksham premises last month.

Since then, Mr Plunkett has been pleased by the response of local customers.

He said: “We’ve had our third week so it’s still early doors, it’s picking up, but we want to get the older generation that used to come in the barbershop.

“The place looks brilliant, it couldn’t be any better.”

The new shop underwent a significant refurbishment before reopening last month, after the previous occupant left the unit empty.

While Mr Plunkett worked in Melksham for over a decade, the Devizes native wanted to rejuvenate the barbershop where he had his hair cut as a boy.

He added: “This has been a traditional British barber shop for years, so I just wanted to bring it back to life.

“I used to come in here as a kid so as soon as I saw it up for lease I wanted to get my hands on it, it’s a sentimental place for a lot of people in the town.

“I’ve even got pictures of the three original barbers who worked here to keep Devizes’ history alive.”
