THE official launch event for a controversial new housing development will take place over the coming days.

Chapel Gate, in Netherhampton Road, will open its doors on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21, for potential buyers to visit the on-site sales office and explore the collection of two-, three- and four-bedroom bungalows and homes on offer.

The new estate which will eventually comprise 106 homes made by Vistry Group's Countryside Homes, has faced a number of controversies since work began.

In May 2023, an archaeological dig in the area uncovered five Bronze Age barrows (circa 2400 BC – 700 BC) spread across two excavation areas, ten burials, three unurned cremation burials, an Iron Age lynchet, a large number of pits and postholes – dating from the Neolithic and Late Bronze Age – plus pottery, knives and red deer antler.

The site has also been subject to this year's flooding in early January when the River Avon burst its banks. It came after the Journal reported in September 2023 that the Chapel Gate development would need a new groundwater pumping station to prevent it from becoming financially unviable.

The letter from Countryside Partnerships to Wiltshire Council says the necessity of the proposed change became apparent during the site commencement “as it has become evident that the site is experiencing extremely high groundwater level and flow rate.”
