Time Team visits Salisbury

TIME Team, Channel 4 television's popular archaeology programme was at Salisbury Cathedral last week undertaking an ambitious dig.

As usual, the team, fronted by archaeologists Mick Aston, Phil Harding and finds advisor Helen Geake, had just three days to uncover the original bell tower and reveal the chancery chapel of one of the Cathedral's most colourful bishops, Richard Beauchamp, who died in 1481.

"It is a great privilege to be excavating the Cathedral," said Professor Mick Aston. "We do a lot of digs in people's gardens and fields, but to do something at an iconic building like the Cathedral is fantastic. We hope to learn something about Bishop Beauchamp and to see how deep the foundations of the bell tower are," he added.

  • To fnd out more about what was uncovered see the October 9 edition of the Salisbury Journal.
