Three graduates with a great sense for business and an equally great sense for tasty food have launched the first Afro-Caribbean take-away in Hatfield.

The idea for A go-go’s, in the Market Place, was created by Blanchard Campbell, 23, Gide Ariyo, 22, and Nahom Teweldemedhin, 23, who all met while studying business degrees at the University of Hertfordshire.

After months of travelling home to London for their favourite home-cooked Afro-Caribbean meals, the students entered their idea into an entrepreneurial competition at the university.

It lost out at the final, but they never gave up on their plan and with the help of lecturers it came to fruition this month.

Blanchard, who graduated with the others this year, said: “It’s really exciting and very hectic at the moment.

“We realised the demographics of Hatfield were changing and their were more Afro-Caribbean people in the area.

“We also knew that all types of people are more open to trying different foods so we thought it was a great time to open up.

“We are all Afro-Caribbean so we would have loved something like this while we were studying.

“We spent all summer working on it, so we’re really enjoying it at the moment.”

The three have decided to open three evenings a week to assess the market for their business, which is self-financed.

Following the support from the University, the three regularly return to give talks to students on employability and entrepreneurial skills.
