Actor George Baker and his actress wife Louie Ramsay will be rummaging in the loft this weekend in preparation for their appearance on a celebrity version of daytime TV show Cash in the Attic.

The couple, who live at Stibb Hill, West Lavington, were approached about taking part in the programme, in which members of the public open their doors to the programme’s experts who look at what items in their home might fetch a good price at auction.

Mr Baker, best known as TV detective Chief Inspector Reg Wexford, said: “I thought we probably had enough stuff knocking about in the house and so they’re coming for a rummage next week.”

Once the items have been selected, they will go to auction and will be up for sale at the spring selected art, antiques and collectables sale at Henry Aldridge and Son’s auction rooms in Devizes on Saturday March 14.

The money raised will go to West Lavington youth club, Mr Baker’s pet charity. He said: “Everyone gives the money to Cancer Research and other good causes like that, but I thought, why not the youth club?”

Mr Baker started the youth club 18 years ago after he saw a group of youngsters huddled in a bus shelter in sub-zero temperatures.

From humble beginnings in the function room at the Churchill Arms, the youth club has grown to occupy its own purpose-built premises beside the village hall and last year a state-of-the-art skateboard park was built on the nearby recreation field.

The TV crew will be filming in the youth club next week and speaking to existing and former members. Proceeds from Cash in the Attic will go to building a shelter by the skateboard park and activities for the 80 youth club members.

Mr Baker said: “We are thinking about skiing and snow boarding lessons and if there is any money left, quad biking sessions as well.”

Recently, the club was forced to expel two members who had been involved in pushing fireworks through a letterbox in the village.

Mr Baker said: “It is such a shame that the activities of two bad lads reflect on the other 80 members.”

Mr Baker’s wife, actress Louie Ramsay, is not well enough to take part, as she is still recovering from a stroke she suffered last year.

But Mr Baker will welcome another colleague from Inspector Wexford, Christo-pher Ravenscroft, who played Inspector Burden, on the celebrity programme.
