Proposals to close the Ministry of Defence site at Upavon in Wiltshire have now been dropped.

The base together with the MoD site at Wilton, makes up the headquarters of the Army's Land Forces.

The two sites are due to be merged to become one operation at Andover in Hampshire with the loss of 350 jobs.

Major Christopher Heart said Upavon was to remain open for administrative purposes, which was good news for the local area.

"The closure of the camp could have a negative affect with the local community as far as jobs are concerned and bringing in business and all of those other things," said Major Heart.

"But with the camp staying open, that's going to continue and flourish hopefully."

There are about 1,000 people - both military and civilian - employed on the Upavon site.
