People living in Hartmoor Road in Devizes fear someone could be killed by speeding motorists.

They are calling for traffic calming measures or a reduction in the speed limit from 30 mph to 20 mph.

Jude Stevens, 28, has lived in Hartmoor Road with partner Adrian Knapp, 38, for four years.

She said: “The problem with speeding motorists has got worse over the last six months. We have boy racers who speed up to 70-80 mph, usually late at night, and it’s very dangerous.”

A speeding car smashed into the garden brick wall of Pamela Penfold-Gale, 70, and her husband, Gordon, on the corner of Broadleas Road and Hartmoor Road last summer.

Mrs Penfold-Gale said: “If someone had been walking there at the time they could have been killed. It was a loud crash and happened during the day but the driver drove off without leaving his details. It cost £490 to rebuild the wall. We have horse riders coming down here and children coming home from school. There are certain cars that zoom up and down the road and it’s very worrying.”

Robert Dady, a 42-year-old musician of Hartmoor Close, said: “It’s a very built up area and we need something to remind people it’s not a race track.”

Miss Stevens, a payroll advisor, wrote to Wiltshire County Council last year asking for speed humps to be installed in Hartmoor Road but was told there was no money available. She wrote to Devizes Town Council last month asking for help.

Town councillors agreed to write to Wiltshire Police asking for officers to enforce the speed limit. The town council has also asked Wiltshire Council to consider introducing 20 mph speed limits in all housing estates in Devizes.
