Tribute to Titanic family among festival's floral displays

A church in the centre of Melksham was filled with floral displays over the Bank Holiday weekend.

St Michael and All Angels’ Flower Festival was designed to attract new people into the church in Canon Square, who might never have been inside before.

The organisers have hailed it as a great success, saying they had more than 100 people through the doors each day.

Sue Seurrier, chairman of Melksham and District Flower Arranging Society and treasurer of St Michael’s Church, said: “We are very happy with the numbers we’ve had.

“The flower arrangements were designed and executed by the Melksham Flower Club but it was more of an outreach exercise.

“We wanted to encourage people who are perhaps a bit intimidated by the church building to attract them to the building, but not for a formal service.”

The theme of the festival was ‘helping hands’ and featured displays from the Royal British Legion, St John Ambulance, Melksham 60 Plus Club, FAB, Talking Newspapers and the town twining associations, among others.

One striking design was inspired by the Titanic plaque in the church which commemorates a family that used to live in Canon Square and who died on board the Titanic.

The festival also included a concert on Saturday night.

The next event in the church’s calender will be a service to mark the departure of Canon Derek Smith and his wife, who are taking up a position with a church in Cyprus at the end of July.
