Police have released the following crime safety advice.

want to remind people of the following important messages; Crime, including burglary is not a matter for the police alone and all statutory agencies work together to address the issue. All members of those organisations will report criminal activity but every member of the community also has a legal and moral responsibility and a role to play in helping to tackle crime.

Buying a so-called bargain and not asking questions about where it came from may mean you are buying stolen property and not just making things worse for everyone but actually committing a crime yourself for which you could go to prison.

Your insurance is costing all of us more because of crime and those who make false insurance claims can also go to prison. The Police in particular are working closely with insurance companies to address increasing numbers of false claims.

Don’t buy so called ‘bargains’ without asking questions. You have a legal responsibility to satisfy yourself that the property is not stolen. If in doubt don’t buy. If suspicious tell the police.

Make sure your property is secure especially in the summer when we are all more likely to leave windows and doors open.

Uniquely mark items so it is then no use to a thief.

Detailed Crime prevention advice and information on how to join a local neighbourhood watch scheme is available from crime prevention officers on 0845 408 7000.

Contact Police with any information in respect of people suspected of committing crime and people believed to be buying or selling stolen property. People often think their piece of information doesn’t matter. Let the police be the judge of that.

If you suspect anyone of acting suspiciously take their description and details of any vehicles including direction of travel and call the police.

It is not just a crime to knowingly buy stolen property but it is just as serious to knowingly allow your property to be used by others to sell stolen property. Turning a blind eye could land you in prison.

Police and other agencies will be targeting their activity at car boot sales, garage sales, second hand shops, licensed premises, food outlets and other locations to recover stolen property.

All information received will be treated in confidence but if you are afraid to contact the police you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
