Members of the Lyneham and Bradenstoke Women’s Institute braved the rain to spend 15 hours carrying out a traffic survey last week.
Nearly 30 volunteers split up into teams of two and took it in turns to stand on either side of Chippenham Road in Lyneham to record every vehicle that passed between 6am and 9pm.
WI member Ann Kingdon said: “The survey went very well and we had about 27 volunteers taking part.
“Most of them did more than one session which was absolutely brilliant because it meant we could have two people on each side of the road so one could watch one way and one could watch the other direction.
“People think the Women’s Institute is all about making jam and singing the Jerusalem but we do so much more.
“We are more about trying to make the community a better place to live in.”
The group recorded every vehicle passing through the village on the B4069 Dauntsey Banks road and the A3102 from Calne, and will present their findings to the Lyneham and Bradenstoke Parish Council Mrs Kingdon said: “Hopefully we will get the parish council on board so we can take it to the next Wootton Bassett and Cricklade Area Board meeting.”
The aim of the day was to raise awareness of the amount of traffic passing through the village on a daily basis.
“We would like to make the village safer for everyone,” said Mrs Kingdon.
