Rush-hour protest for Corsham traffic light objectors

Residents in Corsham will be staging a protest today during the afternoon rush-hour over plans to install traffic lights along the A4.

A small group of about 10 people from the Pickwick area will be standing near to The Two Pigs pub from 5pm to 6pm with placards protesting against the proposed traffic calming measures.

Norman Coates, who lives in Pickwick Road, said: "We will be protesting later today because we do not want these horrible traffic lights to come into place at The Hare and Hounds mini-roundabout or further up the A4.

"Not only will it look terrible but it will bring large queues of traffic to a standstill along Pickwick where we live, bringing with it more noise, fumes and disruption.

"At the moment at least the traffic flows quite well and we accepted the A4 when we bought our houses, but we don't accept large queues of traffic outside our homes."

It's one of the agenda items at the Corsham Area Board meeting at Corsham Town Hall tomorrow (Tuesday 21 July) at 7.00pm (refreshments from 6.30). See the Wiltshire Council website for more details. Members of the public welcome to attend and contribute.

No No and No. The introduction of these monstrosities simply creates a 'packet transport' system, whereby cars are parcelled into two minute packages then sent on their way, creating havoc at the next road congestion point. Is this an admission that the 30mph zone isn't working? A cheap policeman perhaps?

Yes it's one of the items for discussion at the Corsham Area Board meeting on Tuesday night.
The problem will most likely be that under planning legislation these traffic lights were agreed between the planning authority (North Wilts) and the applicants. It is very unlikely they can be undone and certain councillors should be mindful of this and not raise false hopes.
AFter all it was possible to object earlier but almost no one did.

I really can't believe the plan is set in stone at this stage. Hopefully we'll find out more tomorrow.

Not having seen the plan myself, I'm not sure whether I support it or not. As a cyclist I'm no fan of roundabouts though!

Let me guess, you'd prefer traffic lights because cyclits find it much harder to ignore roundabouts compared to red lights?

As a resident of Pickwick I was never aware of a public notice being displayed, in the Hare and Hounds area, regarding the application for traffic lights at the Hare and Hounds. All applications have to be publicly displayed, usually on walls or lamp posts, near to the proposed site. There were none.

Regarding the traffic lights at the Hare and Hounds roundabout nothing is set in stone. Just look at the number of U turns made by Gordon Brown in the last 12 months.
Traffic flows at present more than adequately so why erect traffic lights, if traffic lights are needed in the area look at the junction of the Bradford Road / A4 where the recent tragic fatal accident occured
