Two human skeletons in an enclosed tomb were discovered by workmen in a Bradford on Avon street earlier today.

Police have closed off part of Church Street after workmen with Wiltshire Council’s contractors Ringway, who had been building a footpath alongside Trinity Church at the time, uncovered a vault with what is believed to be ancient human remains.

The road was closed off from about 1.30pm and will remain closed while police carry out their investigations and establish how to remove the skeletons, which are believed to be hundreds of years old.

Local archaeologist Roy Canham, who is heavily involved with the town's museum, was also down at the scene advising on how the remains could be extracted.

PC Martin Annetts, of Bradford on Avon police, said: “Wiltshire Council's Highways staff were carrying out maintenance on the pavement and during that time part of the ground gave way revealing some sort of room with the skeletal remains of two people.”

Workmen described how they found a skull while carrying out their work and decided to call in the police.
