A VETERAN athlete is to fly the flag for Cumbria’s golden oldies when he takes part in an annual trail run.

Ian Addison, 75, is the preparing to take part in the Lowther Trail Run which takes place on Sunday, August 9 - the oldest Cumbrian to enter so far this year.

The retired cancer researcher is training with his club - the Keswick Athletics Club- for the 13-mile race, which will see competitors climb 1,400 feet and cross a river on the Lowther Estate near Penrith.

The grandfather-of-two from Ireby, near Wigton, said: “I remember it was incredibly hot when I ran it for the first time 10 years ago. The course is a nice mix of terrain and I still enjoy running it.

“I’ve been lucky with my health and I’ll keep on entering races so long as I’m not so slow that I keep the marshals out on the course too long.”
