Disappointed manager Adie Mings claims too many of his players did not perform in Saturday's shock FA Cup defeat to Paulton Rovers and the side lacked quality throughout.

Chippenham went down 3-0 in the fourth qualifying round of the competition and missed out on a lucrative home clash with giants Norwich City in the first round proper.

Defensive errors in the build-up to each goal proved costly for the Bluebirds and the boss said his in-form strike pairing were not given the service necessary to restore the balance.

“I thought, on the day, they seemed to play the conditions better than we did,” said Mings.

“First half they defended well then in the second half they just hooked everything on and forced errors from us.

“The first goal has come from a lad not picking up, for the second Greg Tindle's dropped the back-pass short and then after that you're chasing the game. But we never played with any real quality like we have done and that's the disappointing thing.

“Too many didn't turn up and that's when you come unstuck. They looked like they wanted it more than we did.”

Chippenham were praised in the previous round for their attacking display at Havant & Waterlooville but found it hard to break down the determined Somerset side on Saturday.

“We didn't pass it as well as we normally do,” said the boss. “Normally we get it down and we pass it, we get it into the front men. But they were deprived of any service of any quality at all. It was just balls chucked up in the air for them to fight.

“Ben and Powelly have got good quality and they want balls into feet or slid down the sides. Our passing was poor, our desire was poor, we didn't look like we had the same energy levels. If they can't get up for it at this stage of a cup competition then I don't know when they are.”

The club will play Oxford City tomorrow night in the Southern League's cup competition and then host Tooting & Mitcham in the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy at the weekend.

Mings believes his side are mentally strong enough to put the result out of their mind and advance on other fronts, and has challenged them to find their form again immediately.

“We bounced straight back after the 5-1 defeat against Merthyr so as much as I can say its always disappointing to lose, we've got to bounce back again,” he said.

“We've got a Tuesday night game and we've got to go again next Saturday, so it's up to them.”
