GOLDEN girl Stephanie Millward spoke of her pride after picking up an incredible six medals at the European Championships in Iceland.

The Chippenham swimming star, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, claimed five golds at the International Paralympic Committee event with one silver, and broke world and European records along the way.

“I’m very excited about everything,” she said. “When I show people my medals and they say ‘wow’ I just feel so proud.”

Millward’s first gold came in the S9 100m butterfly, which she won in a time of 1:10.78, missing out on a new personal best by just two-tenths of a second.

There was no doubt about the result in the 4x100m medley, however, and the Great Britain team smashed the previous world record by a massive 13 seconds.

A European record accompanied first place in the 400m freestyle, which was followed by a British 1-2-3 i in the 100m backstroke as Millward finished ahead of Lizzie Simpkin and Heather Frederiksen.

“That made it all the more exciting,” she said. “Everyone was screaming and shouting.

“Then on the podium they had the British flag and played the national anthem and all the British team were singing along.

“I know they were playing it for me but it was kind of for everyone and just made it so special.”

Teammate Louise Watkin pipped her to gold in the 100m free but Millward finished the meeting on a high by helping her country to first place in the 34-point 4x100m freestyle relay on Sunday evening.

The 27-year-old stopped by Corsham swimming club on Monday, where she helps with training, to show off her haul, and is now back in Swansea training ahead of next month’s IPC World Championships.
