AARON Cornwall re-introduced himself to Chippenham fans with a stunning display to send the club through to the next round of the Southern League’s cup competition.

The winger was an instrumental part of the Bluebirds side that reached the play-offs in the 2007/08 campaign and was a surprise inclusion on a team sheet which included several fresh faces.

Cornwall, who spent last season at Halesowen, had been playing for Bath City but is now dual-registered with Chippenham.

He made an early impact when a jinking run into the box was prematurely cut short by Oxford defender Adam Morris and allowed Shaun Benison to convert from the penalty spot.

Manager Adie Mings fielded an attacking line-up for the contest with Jon Davies, Luke Gullick and Iain Harvey, in his first game back from injury, completing the midfield quartet.

Davies nearly doubled their lead on 20 minutes but his angled free kick flew narrowly over the visitors’ crossbar.

Cornwall hit the woodwork himself with a long shot soon after but again provided the assist for the second goal on 31 minutes.

Triallist goalkeeper Ian Gill, who has been playing for Highworth Town, aimed an accurate long kick forward, which Cornwall raced into and cut back to Benison.

The striker’s two efforts were saved well by Milan Barisic but Sam Allison, playing as a striker, was on hand to tap in the rebound.

Harvey’s return was limited to an energetic 45 minutes but the Bluebird lost none of their endeavour after the break and made it three on the hour mark.

Cornwall tormented the Oxford right back before cutting into the box and putting the ball on a plate for Benison to score his second of the evening.

The man-of-the-match saved the best goal of the night for himself five minutes later when the ball was rolled to him from a corner and he took advantage of lose marking to blast it into the top corner from 20 yards.

Chippenham Town: Gill, Mason (Hall-Cousins 80), Gardner, Cayford, Tindle, Harvey (Williams 46), Davies, Gullick (Martin 73), Benison, Cornwall, Allison. Subs not used: Powell, Adams.
