Top Gear mystery of iPod found in Chippenham

Soldiers who met the Top Gear presenters while fighting in Afghanistan could lead police officers to the owner of a mystery iPod found in Chippenham.
A black 8gb iPod Nano found in Cepen Park North on October 24 was handed in to police, and nearly a month on nobody has come forward to claim it.
Officers think the clue to the owner lies in the hundreds of photos of soldiers in Afghanistan stored on the mp3 player, some of which feature a visit by Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson.
Sergeant Steve McGrath said: “There are hundreds of photos of guys in desert uniform, and some from a visit by the Top Gear men.
“Obviously these photos would be known by the owner and it would be really nice to get it back to them.
“The guys in these photos are fighting for our people and the safety and democracy of Afghanistan.
“The photos stored on the iPod, especially the Top Gear ones, will be important to the owner and we want to make sure we get it back to them.
“It is obviously a treasured possession to someone and they have taken the time to transfer the photos so they can carry them with them.
“These are memories they can take with them if they are posted back to Afghanistan or elsewhere overseas.
“An iPod is quite a personal thing and this one is full of someone’s experience at war.”
Although two men appear in several photos, none are taken at the right angle for officers to make out the names printed on their helmets.
Sgt McGrath said: “It has their blood group on one side and their names on the other, but the light is glaring over the letters.
“I can tell you the blood type, but the names are a mystery.
“We have made a couple of inquiries with the army and Top Gear themselves to see if they have an idea what units were there at the time, but trying to track this guy down has proven quite difficult.”
