Just weeks after plans were revealed to unite Kennet Valley School on one site the league tables have shown that it is one of the top schools in Wiltshire – even with the disadvantage of operating from a split site.

The school, whose younger children are taught at Lockeridge and the older ones at East Kennett, finished eighth in the county.

Even though the school achieved its best ever place in the top schools charts head teacher Kim Spencer said she had little regard for league tables which reflected academic results and preferred to go by her own judgment of the school turning out children who could hold their own when they moved on to senior schools.

However she said: “I believe the children at Kennet Valley have a fantastic school experience and here we provide a whole all-round education not just for the league tables.

Other top performing schools in the Marlborough and Pewsey areas were Preshute who finished 10th; Ramsbury 12th, Great Bedwyn 20th and Oare 25th.

There was a mixed bag of results for schools in the Wootton Bassett area .

Lydiard Millicent Primary School lead the way with a position of 15th best primary school in the county.

Head teacher Carol Dougill was delighted with the news.

She said: “I am absolutely ecstatic. I know the children and the parents will be thrilled.

“It is a team effort and we all work very hard.

Broad Hinton Primary School and Brinkworth Earl Danby’s Primary School both did well, coming 43rd and 23rd respectively.

Among schools in Calne St Edmund’s Roman Catholic School topped the charts placing 17th and the nearby village school of Hilmarton also made the top 20 coming in 14th.

St Edmund’s headteacher Mike O’Keefe said: “I’m delighted with the efforts of both staff and children. The success has really been a team effort.”
