CHARLIE Austin does not want to be branded the new Simon Cox.

The former bricklayer, who was instrumental in Town’s weekend success over Leyton Orient in League One, is instead determined to forge a career as the ‘original Charlie Austin’.

The striker scored twice for the Robins in Saturday’s 3-2 victory, his third and fourth in three matches since breaking into the starting line-up.

His neat control and predatory instincts have had fans immediately likening the 21-year-old to former fans’ favourite Cox, who is currently scoring plenty for Championship side West Brom.

But Austin wants the County Ground crowd to recognise him as a player in his own right.

“I don’t want anyone to feel that I am the person to come in and fill Simon’s boots,” he said. “I want to be my own person and if I get the chance then it’s fantastic.

“There is pressure from the fans but it is positive. I can only take it as what they expect.

“As long as I get the chance to play and enjoy my football and use my ability to score goals ,then hopefully that will make the fans happy.”

Austin exuded modesty as he catalogued his two strikes against Orient, but the boyhood Swindon fan has a ruthless streak which is quickly endearing him to the Robins faithful.

“I’m just in the right place at the right time,” he said.

“Look at my first goal today - I was in and around the box and just reacted, and it was the same for the second goal as well.

“I never really thought about it. Whenever I’ve played I’ve just been in and around the goal and if I get a chance then I’ll put it in the net.”

The forward heaped praise on his teammates for their contribution to his impressive start to life in a red shirt, and explained how his partnership with Billy Paynter is assisting in his footballing education.

“I’ve just been settling into my career here,” he said. “All the lads have been really good to me. Before the Carlisle game I was really nervous but the boys calmed me down.

“Me and Bill have a good understanding and he talks to me throughout the game. He’s a big help to me.”

But for now, Austin wants to keep on impressing Town’s supporters.

“If the fans like me as much as they like Simon then I’ll definitely be doing a good job.”
