Glassblowing open day raises cash for cancer charity

Glassblowing and jewellery-making thrilled visitors to the fifth annual Christmas open day of the Liquid Glass Centre in Farleigh Hungerford, near Bradford on Avon.

Experienced glassblowers demonstrated their skills, creating bowls and wine glasses, and held short lessons showing people how to blow their own glass bubble for £1.

The money raised will be donated to the charity, Positive Action on Cancer. A prize of a place on one of the centre’s glass blowing courses was given for the biggest bubble blown all weekend.

Centre director Kim Atherton said: “The open day was a complete success and we had about 600 people turn up, of all ages. The youngest bubble blower was a one year old.

“Normally we don’t charge for visitors to blow glass on our open days, but because this charity is such a good cause we knew people wouldn’t mind paying a pound.”

Other activities available included bead-making, glass casting of handprints and a demonstration of how fibre optic cable is made by stretching molten glass very thin.

Those who missed out on the open day can still get involved as there will be glassblowing displays at Bradford on Avon Christmas market up until Christmas Eve.

Visitors will also be able to blow their own bubbles and to make bead jewellery.
