Met Office issues warning of heavy snow for Wiltshire later today

The Met Office has issued a flash warning of heavy snow for Wiltshire expected to hit this afternoon.

The warning is from 3pm today until 6am tomorrow, as a band of rain and sleet will increasingly turn to snow as it spreads in a north easterly direction.

There could be accumulations of between 2cm and 5cm, and up to 10cm in some places, especially on higher ground.

The warning, issued at 10.45am today, covers Wiltshire, Swindon, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bristol and Bath and North East Somerset.

The Met Office issues flash warnings when it has 80 per cent or greater confidence that severe weather is expected within the following few hours.

A light dusting of snow fell overnight last night, onto already icy roads and paths, leading to dangerous conditions for motorists across Wiltshire this morning.

The public is being encouraged to listen to announcements from the Highways Agency and local police and council about conditions on the roads.
