Gary finally laid to rest after 18 years

THE family of a boy whose organs were removed without consent laid him to rest at a ceremony on Wednesday 19 years after his death.

Mourners gathered at Enfield's Lavender Hill Cemetery to pay their last respects to Gary Lyon.

Gary died at Great Ormond Street Hospital at the age of eight in 1985, but his family was only told in 2001 that several of his organs, including his brain and heart, had been removed at the time of his death.

Father Barry is one of around 1,300 parents who can now seek compensation, after a High Court ruled that the NHS had been negligent in taking body parts without permission.

The end of the court case in March allowed the Lyons' to make arrangements for the collection of the missing organs.

Gary's brother and sister, John and Joanne, were present at the ceremony.

Mr Lyon said: "It has taken a long while for us to get this far and its a big relief now. I will just try to get on with my life."

The burial was followed by a reception at the Lincoln Arms pub.
