West Wiltshire MP Dr Andrew Murrison is to head up a Parliamentary group on links with Morocco.

The MP will lead the joint Commons and Lords group to promote good relations with the country.

He said: “I am very pleased to be elected chairman of this important group, particularly given the links that exist between my constituency and Morocco.”

Dr Murrison represents Trowbridge which twinned with Oujda last year. Trowbridge is thought to have around 80 Moroccan families - the greatest number outside of London.

Lance Allen, Trowbridge Town Council clerk, said: “Our aim with the twinning has always been to foster a good relationship between the two communities and enhance our links with the Moroccan community.”

The appointment of Dr Murrison as the head of the committee comes ahead of his meeting with the new Morrocan Ambassador in London in March.
