Westbrook farmer on cruelty charges

12:30pm Friday 29th January 2010

Farmer Lance Beale appeared at Salisbury Magistrates Court on Monday to face animal welfare charges.

Beale, 59, of Wyatts Lake Farm, Westbrook, near Bromham, is charged with nine offences relating to events on or before January 23 last year.

One of the charges alleges Beale breached a ban on keeping livestock and had custody of pigs and one lamb, while another charge alleges that Beale caused a pig to suffer by failing to provide it with a suitable diet resulting in its death through starvation.

The charges arose after police and animal welfare officials swooped on Wyatts Lake Farm at Westbrook near Bromham on January 23 last year and found the carcasses of several pigs.

Beale’s barrister Andrew Wagstaff told the court that the farmer had indicated to his instructing solicitors he would be denying the charges.

The case was adjourned to February 19 at Salisbury Magistrates Court for a date to be fixed for a trial.
