Plans for Sainsbury’s to extend its store in Melksham have been refused by Wiltshire councillors.
The scheme would have added an extension to the store and its car park, as well as moving the petrol station to behind the Bear pub on Bath Road.
Cllr Rod Eaton, who is on the Western Area Planning Committee, which met on Wednesday evening, said: “There has been a lot of lobbying from residents and although we are not against the extension and are in full support of Sainsbury’s we want to support the residents also.”
He said councillors objected to the plans because of fears over flooding, as the extended car park would mean less land to absorb water; that the petrol station would be near a conservation area which would also be overlooked by houses and that the design did not fit the look and feel of that area.
He said the council would consider the plans if they were re-submitted having addressed the flooding and conservation issues.
