Trowbridge pupils uncover school’s past

An archaeological dig was carried out by pupils at Larkrise School in Trowbridge with TV archaeologist Julian Richards, of the BBC’s Meet the Ancestors .

The dig, which began on February 23, covered an area in the school grounds where an extension will be built.

Pupils divided the ground into a grid and were taught how to dig and recognise artefacts.

Teacher Penny Williams said: “The youngsters really enjoyed it. They have washed all the things we found and have been sorting them into groups.”

Mr Richards said: “We found lots of things, 19th century pottery mostly. The oldest is a clay pipe bowl from about 300 years ago. Archaeology is two things kids enjoy, playing in the dirt and finding things.”

* Larkrise has secured planning permission for three new classrooms and catering facilities in a £335,000 building project.
