A flower shop owner believes a thief who swiped a bouquet of flowers from the back of her van on Mothering Sunday stole them as a gift for his own mother.
The theft happened outside The Flower Shop in Warminster Road, Westbury, at about 10am on Sunday.
Shop owner Jenny Garrett and her son-in-law Dave Swift were loading up with deliveries.
Mrs Garrett, who took over the shop nine years ago, said: “We were loading up the van with bouquets for Mother’s Day deliveries and then my son-in-law spotted someone running down the road with a bunch.
“He ran after him but the thief jumped in a scruffy black car which seemed to be waiting for him in Leigh Road.
“I think it was an opportunist because the van was only left unattended for a few seconds.
“We always have tickets on our flowers so he probably took the ticket off before giving it to his mum.
“It’s really annoying that someone would do this, especially on Mother’s Day.”
The bouquet, which cost £30, included a host of seasonal flowers including white trachelium, a white chrysanthemum bloom, pussy willow, carnations, tulips and gerberas.
The tulips could not be included in the replacement bouquet as the shop had run out.
Mrs Garrett added: “When my daughter Carly went round to deliver it she said we were sorry there weren’t any tulips in it, which had been specifically asked for, because the original bouquet had been stolen.
“I’m not going to report it to police as I think it is a futile thing to report. It’s annoying but what can you do?
“We have never had anything happen like this before. You don’t think of people doing this kind of thing.”
