Plan for Quakers Walk primary health centre scrapped

Controversial plans to build a primary care centre on land near Quakers Walk, Devizes, were today scrapped by the health trust.

Wiltshire NHS chief executive Jeff James said the plan was no longer financially viable. It means that after four years of talking about a new health centre for the town he will have to go back to the drawing board.

And he admitted he was no longer confident that money could be found in the short term for a centre to be built at the original site in Green Lane.

He said: "In recent years financial restraints have become toughter. We will have to look at a more imaginative way to take this forward."

He said the trust remained committed to providing better health facilities in the town but it seemed he may be shying away from creating a new centre to house all the town's GPs, out patient clinics and x-ray under one roof.

He said he could not give any timescale for a new plan going ahead.

He will be at the Devizes Area Board meeting tonight to discuss the latest twist to the long running saga.

Camapaigners who did not want the centre built at Quakers Walk will be celebrating but others will be worried the town will be left with out-dated services.

The trust is desperate to sell-off Devizes Hospital and the clinic in New Park Street to raise cash but has pledged not to do this until a new centre has been built.

It is unclear if St Monica's Trust, which wants to build an old people's home at Quakers Walk will still push ahead with its plan on its own. Today it said it did not want to comment at this stage.

How many thousands of pounds have been wasted this time to discover that this is 'no longer financially viable'?

Great news but very worrying that NHS Wiltshire's Chief Executive has made yet another U Turn. He is incompetent at the very least.

I totally agree with Illduce which brings back the old debate why was the hospital ever closed it seems the relevent departments making the decisions got it wrong. At least this time they dont know if a new centre will be built or not so much to decide as the town grows in every direction and with it the population we need it or does that not matter open your eyes and see whats happening in the town or are the decision makers so far out of Devizes they dont know. In the mean time another review more committees and with it more wasted cash no wonder the cost of building is financially not viable your spending all the cash dithering sitting on the fence for heavens sake do what your paid for and make a decision or are we waiting for public donations or a lottery hand out this seems to be the only way this town gets anything done

In the old days, health people could just buy the land they want and build on it so long as the plans were approved. Now with all this private and public partnership rubbish they have to do all sorts of deals and it's no wonder they fall through so often. I still don't trust them and think that if they can get out of their promise to provide some sort of health care centre in Devizes they will but I suspect that this time it wasn't entirely their fault.
