Mum Carey Gay and her two sons were left fighting for their lives after a horrific crash near Kingsdown Golf Club at Box.

Mrs Gay had been taking her two teenage sons to The Corsham School along an unclassified road near the golf club when her silver Toyota Avensis was in collision with a black Range Rover at a junction at the brow of Bath Hill shortly before 8.20am on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old driver of the Range Rover suffered minor injuries after his vehicle rolled over several times.

The man, from Pewsey, was arrested at the scene and taken to Melksham Police Station where he remained in police custody until he was released on bail later that evening.

The collision forced both cars off the road and onto the 18th hole of the golf course. Club staff rushed to their aid before paramedics arrived.

Mrs Gay, of Lower Kingsdown Road, near Box, suffered serious head injuries and suspected pelvic injuries.

She was airlifted to the Royal United Hospital, Bath but later transferred to intensive care at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol, where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Her 13-year-old son Ryan also remains in a critical but stable condition in intensive care in the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children with severe abdominal injuries. He underwent surgery at the RUH where he was initally taken on Tuesday.

Mrs Gay’s 15-year-old son Andrew, who had been travelling in the front of the car, sustained serious leg injuries and was taken to RUH by ambulance, where he he is in a critical but stable condition.

The Corsham School assistant headteacher, Viv Powell, said: “The school was deeply saddened to hear about the road traffic accident affecting the Gay family. Andrew and Ryan are both studious, kind, considerate and popular students.

“Our thoughts are with them, their mother and the whole of their family.”

Paramedic team leader Ross Culligan: “I have been a paramedic for ten years and I have never seen anything like this.”
