DUATHLON: Yasmin Smith was celebrating after winning the Swindon Duathlon short/youth event for the third year running.

And there was more local success as 16-year-old Richard Batsford won the 5km ahead of fellow Swindon Harrier 34-year-old Jason Barry.

Winning the main event at the 11th Swindon Duathlon at Wroughton's Science Museum was Army triathlete Tom Lowe, pipping Hampshire's Chris Birch and Milton Keynes' Dave Brown to the top prize.

No other female was a match for Michelle Parsons of Worcester Tri Club as she strolled to an easy victory.

Chippenham Wheeler David Ballantyne finished 17th overall in a time of 2:05:47, Mike Cox of Calne won the 50-54 age group and Swindon Tri clubs Daniel Martin was fourth in the 35-39 category.

The day got underway with the 5km Cat adult fun run and 1.5km Children's Fun Run in support of Cancer Research UK.

And people travelled a fair distance to take part, including the 1.5km winner, 12-year-old Nick Browning from Gloucester.

Browning, a member of Triathlon Team Glos, dominated from the gun finishing 27 seconds ahead of another club runner Lily Cartwright of Abindon Amblers, who easily took the first girls prize.

Just behind them there was a real tussle between Wroughton Ridgeway School pupils James Wilkinson and Matthew Gowshall.

At the line it was Gowshall who took the second spot and just to prove what a sporting family they are, his sister Ellic finished second girl.

In fact the whole Gowshall family took part, with the three children in the 1.5km, mum the 5km and dad the duathlon.

Behind Swindon Harriers Batsford and Barry in the 5km was Nathan Smith of Devizes Running Club while first female home was 41-year-old Susan Lee from Wootton Bassett.

Lee finished one minute ahead of Swindon's Julie Whish who took the second prize.

In the Short Duathlon of 5km-40km-2.5km youth Robert Bowle of Wantage had a commanding lead after the bike stage and was never challenged, by second-placed Stuart Dinwoodie of Chippenham.

Many local people took part in this event including Lynsey Tushingham, who hadn't been on a bike for years, but dusted it off especially for this event and although she finished in last place.
