A 20-stone karate black belt who left the mother of his children with a broken arm after a drunken attack has been jailed.

Anthony Sweet, 41, grabbed his partner, who weighs just seven-and-a-half-stone, by the arm and twisted it behind her back with such force that she heard it snap.

As well as being jailed for three years, Sweet, of no fixed abode, has been banned from contacting his children or their mother for five years.

Hannah Squire, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court last Thursday, that the couple had been together for more than a decade and had three children.

During this period, Miss Baker had been subjected to a history of abuse which had twice caused her to leave him and stay in a refuge.

In a police statement, Miss Baker described how Sweet had also taunted her as ‘Baker the baby killer’ after she had a pregnancy terminated after finding the child would be born with spina bifida.

Miss Squire said on March 1 Sweet got home shortly after 7.30pm having been in the pub.

The couple started to argue and he grabbed hold of her hair and threw her across a coffee table.

“She told him to get out. He grabbed hold of her left hand. With extreme force he doubled her arm around and twisted it behind her back,” she said.

“As he twisted it she heard it snap. She tried to push him out. He pushed her across and she hit the banister.”

The next day she went to Trowbridge Hospital where an x-ray found she had a spiral fracture to the left ulna.

Sweet, of no fixed abode admitted grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm.

Alex Daymond, defending, said his client had slumped into depression and drink after the termination of the pregnancy.

He said he would go to work and straight to the pub, following which they often rowed.

“Mr Sweet has lost everything as a result of what he did that day. He faces the prospect of life without his family,” he said.

“He is going to struggle to get contact with his children and he knows that that is his fault.

“If he is going to have any relationship with his children, and I appreciate they may not want that at the moment, he is going to have to do a lot.”

Judge Douglas Field said: “You are a drunk bully and for many years your family have been in fear of your violence and intimidation and this incident involving a spiral fracture of your partner’s arm is extremely serious. You have no excuse for this unacceptable behaviour.”
