Recordings of some of wartime premier Winston Churchill’s famous and rousing speeches will be played when Marlborough Royal British Legion commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Former serviceman and women and in particular members of the dwindling band of Second World War veterans are being invited to attend the commemoration evening taking place in the meeting room behind the Conservative Club in the High Street on September 18.
Although Marlborough’s RBL club closed in January there is still an active branch.
Chairman Bill Copeland said the Battle of Britain commemoration evening was open to all ex-service personnel and their partners and there was a nominal charge of £2 for tickets. He said: “This is such an important anniversary not only for war veterans but for everyone because the Battle of Britain was such an important event in our history.”
The RBL branch president, Air Commodore Jerry Witts, will be giving a talk illustrated with slides of aircraft in action during the battle, which raged through the summer and autumn of 1940.
Original recordings of some of Churchill’s most memorable speeches will be played during the evening at which the duet Artbeat will play period music.
Transport will be provided free of charge by arrangement with Mr Copeland on (01672) 513893 or Eddie Witts on (01672) 512854 who will also reserve tickets.
