Artists staged a protest outside Malmesbury Abbey on Bank Holiday Monday after being refused permission to display their work on railings around the church.
The carnival exhibition was held instead on railings around the Old Bell Hotel, next to the abbey.
Protester Bob Browning said: “The abbey is a big part of Malmesbury and should be more involved with the carnival.
“It seems quite anti social to me. They are happy to have a skatepark in the abbey so why can’t they have an art exhibition?”
Abbey vicar Neill Archer said: “Not every work of art is appropriate for a Christian site or building.
“We didn’t want people turning up and hanging works of art on the railings that would not be suitable.
“To be honest it would probably have been okay, but there may have been some pieces which were offensive to the Christian faith.”
In addition, two art exhibitions had already been displayed in the abbey this year.
