MP takes Wiltshire police brutality case to Commons

Chippenham MP Duncan Hames today questioned Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg about police disciplinary procedures, following the sentencing yesterday of a Wiltshire police officer for an assault at Melksham police station.

Called for the first time at Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons, Duncan said: “Yesterday, a serving police officer was jailed for an appalling assault committed in a police station in my constituency.

“Whilst I believe we can draw confidence in Wiltshire police from the brave officer who blew the whistle, does the Deputy Prime Minister agree that it cannot be right that owing restrictive police conduct regulations, the offending officer continued on full pay for more than two years after the attack?”

Nick Clegg said he was deeply shocked by footage of the attack, adding: “I’m glad that action has finally been taken – I wish like him, of course, that action could have been taken earlier.”

Duncan Hames is inviting the government to look again at these regulations in order that police disciplinary procedures may be both fair and timely.
