FRESH faces have been welcomed through the doors of Swindon College.
More than 900 students attended the college’s freshers’ fair at the North Star campus yesterday.
There were stalls, games, music and team sign up sheets for the new teenagers who started on Monday, as well as for the returning students.
Rebecca Cork, the marketing officer at the college, said: “It’s important to promote all of the extra activities that are available to our students, as it’s not just a place to come and study, there is so much more on offer.
“It’s a chance to see new faces and make the students as relaxed and welcome as possible and see the staff here as well.
“Anything we have here they can access throughout the year. We’ve had a really good turn-out.”
There were representatives from the Army, Thamesdown Buses, the Church and the Samaritans were also on hand to offer advice.
“This is an opportunity for them to come in and see what’s going on,” said Rebecca.
Chelsey Hooper, 16, of Pinehurst, started at the college this week and is studying Childcare Level 3. She has already made the most of the activities and said she felt very welcome.
“It’s really friendly. I joined a dance group here and we have just performed a dance to Chris Brown. I was really nervous but it went fine,” she said.
Students could also sign up for badminton, basketball, football, trampolining, cycling, netball and ultimate Frisbee.
Naveen Ahmed, 23, of Gorse Hill, is studying coaching at the college.
He is a gold ambassador for the college and was responsible for signing students up for sport.
“It’s the first time I’ve had the chance to come here but it’s been fantastic,” he said.
“I’m just trying to get as many people involved as possible.
“I thought I would find it hard to get the girls to sign up for sport but it hasn’t been difficult at all.
“People can suggest different sports they want to play.”
The event was the college’s biggest freshers’ fair and more than 50 exhibitors were there .
The college still has places available on some courses.
