Wiltshire Council is working in conjuction with Swindon Council on developing a Minerals Core Strategy, which it is required to do under Government regulations.
None of the sites identified by the councils’ consultant geologists has planning permission and any that are chosen by councillors will have to go through a rigorous planning process.
The sand and gravel would be destined for the construction industry, but no targets have been set for Wiltshire.
The identified sites are divided among five areas: the Upper Thames Valley, the Calne area, south east of Salisbury, the Bristol Avon and the Salisbury Avon.
Sites in the Calne area cover a total of more than 394 hectares with a total estimated yield of 25,175,000 tonnes.
This includes land near Compton Bassett (four sites), land south of Calne (two sites), land north of Bromham (four sites), land near Studley, west (two sites), land north of Pitters Farm (one site), land adjacent to Sahara (one site), land near Rowde (one site).
The Bristol Avon area sites include land south of Chippenham (three sites) and land near Sutton Benger (four sites.
