Town councillors have appealed for suggestions after plans to house Malmesbury’s CCTV equipment in the town’s police station were shelved.

Despite space at the police station already being cleared for the equipment, the move was blocked to save money as part of the police strategic review.

Town councillors had been recruiting volunteers to help monitor the cameras during busy periods but that has been put on hold until another location can be found.

Town councillor Ray Sanderson said keeping the equipment in the town hall was not a long-term solution.

He said: “It is disappointing. The room at the police station was all ready.

“We were just waiting for one of the cameras to be fixed and then we were going to move it in.

“We have four or five volunteers already signed up and could do with a few more.

“But until we get this resolved we can’t ask people to come forward.”

He added: “The equipment is currently in the town hall but because it’s a public building it is not really suitable for security reasons.”

Malmesbury library in Cross Hayes is being investigated as a possible location. Malmesbury Fire Station has been ruled out.

Wiltshire councillor Simon Killane said the move did not signal that the police station was under threat of closure.

He urged anyone with suggestions for new locations to contact the town council.
