Dominic Smith’s Lego portrait of his 19-month-old son Angus was the runaway winner of the People’s Prize in this year’s open art exhibition at the Pound Arts Centre in Corsham.

Mr Smith, 36, a ceramic artist, photographer and product designer, of The Cleeve, Corsham, said: “I was amazed and delighted to win.

“I entered after seeing last year’s open exhibition.

“But I wasn’t sure my Lego portrait would even be considered art.”

His portrait of his son, with himself in the background, was created by manipulating the photograph on his computer and analysing the pixels to work out the different colours.

It took a total of 1,024 tiny Lego bricks in grey, yellow, white and fawn with a black background to create the picture.

“Lego don’t make pink or flesh tones at the moment,” he said.

Mr Smith, who works with his partner, textile teacher Emma Warwood, on individual pieces, has already been asked by friends to create Lego portraits of their children, since they have seen his prize-winning picture of Angus, who was about nine months old when the photograph was taken.

Mr Smith said he has loved Lego since he was a child and kept his collection to pass on to Angus.

“Apparently it is among the favourite toys people keep to pass on to their children,” he said.

He said his £100 People’s Prize will invested in future art projects.
