Campaigners hoping to reopen Trowbridge driving test centre have taken their message to Downing Street and PM David Cameron.

The group has battled to reopen the centre, formerly at Wiltshire Drive next to the council offices, since it was closed in August 2008.

Now campaign leader Gary Fossey has taken the issue to Mr Cameron after it was revealed two test centres in Scotland had been given a second chance.

Mr Fossey, 46, said: “These two test centres are in the middle of nowhere and had been due to close in March but all of a sudden the decision was turned around.

“The distance those people were having to travel was no greater than what we now face in Trowbridge.

“We are taking the issue straight to Mr Cameron and hope that he will listen.”

The campaign group had considered leasing four car parking spaces at the Lovemead car park, in Duke Street, using their own funds so tests could be run from Trowbridge.

But the scheme, which could have cost the driving instructors up to £7,000 between then, was dropped.

Mr Fossey, who has worked as an instructor for six years, added: “We had been due to meet the government minister responsible to discuss the idea and it was cancelled. It is a real shame because we believed this was the Big Society in action, something which Mr Cameron keeps talking about.”

The group is now waiting to hear from Downing Street after their letter was posted on Monday.
