Campaingers have lost their fight to stop 50 homes being built at a country park in Wootton Bassett.

The initial application by Wainhomes to build at Brynards Hill, Bincknoll Lane, was granted on appeal to the Planning Inspectorate, after Wiltshire Council rejected the plans in November.

The development is in addition to an approved application by Wainhomes for 100 houses and a country park – the site where 50 homes are now proposed.

“They (Wainhomes) beat us once again,” said Geoff Yates, chairman of the Wootton Bassett 4 Brynards Hill campaign group, who lives next to the proposed development.

“Obviously we are very disappointed but our primary concern is the fact that the inspector paid no attention to the closure of RAF Lyneham.

“Quite a number of the 2,000 people working there, many of whom live in Wootton Bassett, are going to have to move, and there’s going to be a surplus of housing.

“Wiltshire Council, in its draft core strategy paper, recommended 150 houses there, and that’s what snookered us.

“Wainhomes boast on their website about the fact they can get planning applications through where no one else can.

“Wainhomes don’t care about local opinion. There is nothing else we can do now.”

Objections were initially received from 25 residents and the town council. The four-day planning appeal began on April 5 and the decision was announced on May 12.
