Fans of musicals had the edge when it came to naming scarecrows in Lacock at the weekend.

Among the easier ones to identify were The Lion King, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and Chicago. But others kept visitors guessing as they did the rounds of the village.

The event, which raises money for Friends of Lacock School, used to run for up to three weeks, but this was cut in a compromise between its organisers and residents who felt that it brought too many people to the already busy village.

It now runs for three days which, this year, were windy and rainy – but hundreds still turned out to see the creations.

“We used to make about £15,000,” said Jurica Stokes, secretary of the friends of the school. “I think this year, without any expenses, we made £4,300. ”

In the past the money has been spent to fully refurbish and ICT suite at the school with laptops, and pupils are able to enjoy frequent educational trips.

The 46 scarecrows also included the car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Shrek and Donkey.

“You need to see it. You won’t believe what papier maché can do!” said Mrs Stokes. Local businesses gave prizes.

Friends of Lacock School would like to thank Jacqueline Naylor-Leyland for opening the event, and for her help and support in local ventures.
