More than 2,000 air guitar fans turned out at WOMAD on Sunday for a world record attempt.

Action on Hearing Loss, formerley the RNID, wanted music fans at the Charlton Park weekend festival to attempt to break the record for the largest number of people playing air guitar at the same time.

A record 2,227 turned out and rocked the main stage with Jimi Hendrix’s legendary track Purple Haze, and WOMAD favourite, rock singer Justin Adams.

Action on Hearing Loss spokeswoman Emma Harrison said: "To quote The Queen song: We are the champions! We’ve got to thank every person who got up early and showed off their imaginary strumming. Jimi Hendrix would have been proud of us.

"We always knew the WOMAD crowd would get behind us, as they’ve traditionally been great supporters of our campaign to get more people to wear earplugs when listening to loud music at live events."

The attempt was made with the help of current Air Guitar UK Champion, Thom 'W!ld Th!ng 37' Wilding and beats the current record of 1,883 people.

The Guinness Book of World Records is in the process of examining the attempt, in which the crowd had to play for 90 seconds and do at least three air guitar moves within an enclosed area.

WOMAD organiser Chris Smith said: "What an achievement by Action on Hearing Loss. We’ve worked together for a number of years and delighted that so many people turned up to support a worthwhile cause!"

The Air Guitar World Record attempt was in aid of the Action on Hearing Loss music campaign, which raises awareness about the importance of listening to loud music safely by wearing hearing protection at gigs and festivals.
