Whitehall Garden Centre in Lacock was transformed into 1940s Britain at the weekend.

Wartime displays, vintage military exhibitions and a Spitfire flypast were part of the fourth annual Dig for Victory show.

The garden centre was decked out in ’40s style with the help of the Blitz Buddies, who tour the country recreating civilian life of the era, and the Military Vehicle Trust.

Pat Nichols, events co- ordinator at Whitehall, is delighted with how the event has grown.

She said: “Four years ago I asked a friend involved in the Blitz Buddies to come along and help out and it’s just grown from there.

“This year it was really well attended and the garden centre was very full.

“It’s always popular with customers – they are always asking when it’s going to be on.

“This year we even had calls about it from people wanting to come down from as far away as Chester.”

Among the nostalgia inducing displays were an American GI bar, a 1940s kitchen, a shop front with the fashions of the day, an air raid wardens’ post and an aircraft look-out complete with identification chart.

There was also a 1940s dance, a period fashion show and, on Saturday, the Spitfire flypast.

Mrs Nichols said: “The Spitfire crossed overhead about five times so we could see the different sides.

“When it flew off, the pilot tipped his wings to wave goodbye.

“We also had 30 plus military vehicles on display as well as a German field hospital.”
